DOÑA CATALINA DE BOLEA. LOS LANCES DE UNA MONJA NOBLE ENTRE ARAGÓN Y LA GUERRA DE CATALUÑA (1629-1641)

Abstract

Doña Catalina de Bolea, dama noble, monja y hermana de la escritora Ana Francisca Abarca de Bolea, llevó una vida agitada que la llevó a huir de su monasterio y a tener un papel destacado en las convulsiones catalanas de 1640. Su historia y la de sus raptores nos permiten ver la realidad efectiva de algunos tipos de la ficción del Siglo de Oro como el galanteo de monjas o la «mujer vestida de hombre». Este contraste de fuentes literarias e históricas arroja luz sobre los usos amorosos y, con ello, sobre la historia de las mujeres desde el punto de vista de la vida personal, aún escasamente considerado.

Catalina de Bolea and her sister, the well-known writer Ana Francisca Abarca de Bolea, led very different lives. Despite being a noblewoman and a nun, Catalina fled her monastery and played a remarkable part in the Catalan 1640's turmoil. Her personal story, along with that of her abductors, reflects the reality of some Spanish Golden Age literary topics, such as the courting of nuns, and the cross-dressed women. This complementarity of literary and historical sources sheds light on the Spanish baroque love customs, and thus on women's history, from an intimate point of view, which has been rarely noticed.
