Abstract

Charles Borromeo (Arona, 2.10.1538 - Milan, 3.11.1584) was one of the most influential figures of the Catholic Reformation in Europe. This celibate took on important responsibilities within the Church at the age of 22 through the mediation of his uncle, Pope Pius IV: protonotary apostolic, refrendary, cardinal and archbishop of Milan. During his mandate at the head of this Lombard ecclesiastical seat, he led, promoted and implemented an important programme of reforms with which he managed to change the functioning, the organisation and the perception that the population had of the behaviour of previous prelates, who were far removed from a reality that demanded attention. His figure has been - and still is - studied from different perspectives. Nevertheless, and about the impetus given to the Eucharistic cult, there is a lack of a comprehensive approach, sufficiently broad in its disciplinary focus to amplify the dimension, range and diffusion of his projects through the analytical relationship of concepts of a diverse conceptual nature. The following holistic approach focuses on studying his spiritual convictions, pedagogical abilities and notable activism in favour of the artistic promotion of sacramental devotion, based on a critical study of primary and secondary documentary sources.
