Abstract

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo el estudio de los Cantos Escolares (1888) de Juan Fernández Ferraz (1849-1904) y de José Campadabal (1849-1905), un cancionero escolar de amplia difusión en Costa Rica, obra de dos españoles asentados en el país y convertidos en dos de los próceres de la educación y la cultura en la joven república. Se pretende reflexionar, más allá del hecho musical concreto, sobre el alcance y significado de esta selección de canciones, cuya temática sintetizaba aspectos esenciales, tanto educacionales y morales, sobre los que se consideró que debía cimentarse la república. Inicialmente se procede a una amplia contextualización de la obra y sus autores, atendiendo a factores ideológicos y musicales. Se realiza un análisis de los estudios vigentes, trascendiendo los aspectos específicamente musicales en aras de plantear la importancia y significado del desarrollo del canto colectivo en el ámbito social y en la enseñanza costarricense de la segunda mitad del ochocientos. Se reseñan las diferentes iniciativas educativas en las que la canción, convertida en una herramienta didáctica relevante, constituye un vehículo idóneo como creador de prosélitos, correligionarios de una nueva nación en ciernes. Se puede concluir que la relevancia del cancionero excede el mero documento educativo-musical, tratándose de una obra de un valor documental ya que, más allá de sus evidentes limitaciones como material didáctico-musical por su anacronismo y su cariz colonial, adquiere un valioso significado desde una óptica historiográfica y sociológica dentro de la deriva histórica de la educación costarricense.

The present article aims to study the Cantos Escolares(School Songs) (1888) by Juan Fernández Ferraz (1849-1904) and José Campadabal (1849-1905), a widely disseminated school songbook in Costa Rica, created by two Spaniards who settled in the country and became key figures in education and culture in the young republic. The objective is to reflect, beyond the specific musical aspect, on the scope and meaning of this selection of songs, which synthesized essential educational and moral aspects upon which the republic was considered to be built. Initially, a broad contextualization of the work and its authors is provided, taking into account ideological and musical factors. An analysis of existing studies is conducted, going beyond specifically musical aspects in order to highlight the importance and significance of collective singing development in the social sphere and in Costa Rican education during the second half of the nineteenth century. Different educational initiatives are described in which songs, transformed into relevant didactic tools, serve as an ideal vehicle to create supporters, advocates of a nascent nation. It can be concluded that the relevance of this songbook surpasses its mere educational and musical document status, as it represents a work of documentary value. Despite its obvious limitations as outdated and colonial material for teaching music, it acquires valuable significance from a historiographic and sociological perspective within the historical trajectory of Costa Rican education.
