Abstract

War and Peace has assured its position in the universal literature canon not for few reasons. The experiences of some noble families of the early nineteenth century Russia, challenged by the Napoleonic menace, have many things to say to us about ourselves. That's why it would be imprecise to define War and Peace as a historical novel, as we won't find its merit nor essence there: not even Tolstoy itself was sure that it was a novel. War and Peace is a treaty about Philosophy and History, an effort to put the great men in their place, and it is, above all, one of the most masterful narrations that anyone has ever done of the human experience, and everything that it entails: its hopes, disappointments, contradictions, changes; its love, its effort to come to a truth, or at least to achieve consolation; its resistance to tragedy, and how it blossoms in it. It is quite difficult to finish reading War and Peace without becoming a better human than one was before knowing the stories of the Rostov, Bolkonsky and Bezukhov families.
