דרכי הטמעת הרעיון הציוני בפיטסבורג דרך הפעילות הציונית המוקדמת בעיר ותרומתה לפעילות הציונית האמריקאית משנת 1881 ועד 1924

Abstract

עבודת מחקר זו עוסקת בדרכי ההטמעה של "הרעיון הציוני" בפיטסבורג דרך הפעילים הציונים המוקדמים, בין השנים 1881 ו,1924- שנודעו כתקופת גל ההגירה הגדול מאירופה לארצות הברית ואשר במהלכן הגיעו כ- 2.5 מיליון יהודים לארצות הברית. המחקר מתמקד בעיר פיטסבורג, מדינת פנסילבניה, ובודק מי היו הפעילים הציונים בעיר וכיצד הם החדירו את "הרעיון הציוני" לתוך חברה יהודית ותיקה ומבוססת, שהושפעה הן מקשריה עם החברה היהודית המקומית והארצית והן מהאווירה העולמית ששררה באותן שנים כלפי היהודים וכלפי "הרעיון הציוני" והציונות כולה. המחקר נפתח בסקירת הרקע ההיסטורי, כולל התפתחות "הרעיון הציוני" באירופה, מ עברו לארצות הברית ותגובת הקהילה היהודית על גווניה הדתיים והחברתיים כלפיו, בעיקר בפיטסבורג. הדיון מתמקד בפעילות הציונית המוקדמת בקרב בני הקהילה היהודית בפיטסבורג ובהתמודדות הפעילים הציונים עם האתגרים שהציבו בפניהם הן האירועים העולמיים ובעיקר חברי התנועה הרפורמית החזקה, שהתנגדה באופן מסורתי ל"רעיון הציוני". דרכי הטמעת "הרעיון הציוני" נבדקו דרך מספר עדשות, החל מהפעילות המוקדמת בקרב תושבי העיר היהודים, דרך הקמת האגודות הציוניות על-ידי הפעילים וכלה בכינוס קונגרסים וכנסים ציוניים בפיטסבורג, בהם השתתפו ראשי ההנהגה הציונית האמריקאית. הכנסים שהתקיימו בעיר והשתתפותם של בכירי התנועה הציונית בהם, הציבה את פיטסבורג על מפת הציונות והפכה אותה לנקודה חשובה במהלך סיוריהם ברחבי ארצות הברית. המחקר מתבסס על מקורות ראשוניים העוסקים בפעילות הציונית המוקדמת בעיר למין ראשיתה. המקורות כוללים פרוטוקולים של הכנסים וכתבות בעיתונות המקומית והארצית, שבחנו את הפעילות הציונית בפיטסבורג ועודדו את ההצטרפות למועדונים הציוניים. נעשה שימוש במקורות משניים שעוסקים בדמותם ובחייהם של הפעילים והשפעתם על הפעילות הציונית המקומית. הממצאים מצביעים על העובדה שלמרות שההיסטוריוגרפיה הציונית אינה נותנת מקום נרחב לציוני פיטסבורג המוקדמים, הרי שפעילותם המקומית הייתה חשובה ומשמעותית, ותרומתם לתנועה הציונית האמריקאית לא הייתה זניחה כלל ועיקר

This research examines how the "Zionist Idea" was implemented in Pittsburgh through its early activists between 1881 and 1924. These years are known as the period of the Great Wave of immigration from Europe to the United States, during which 2.5 million Jews arrived in the United States. The research focuses on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, exploring who the early Zionist activists in the city were, and how they managed to instill the "Zionist idea" into an established Jewish community. This community was influenced both by its connections with local and national Jewish society and by the global atmosphere regarding Jews, the "Zionist idea," and Zionism as a whole. The research begins with a historical background review, covering the development of the "Zionist idea" in Europe, its transfer to the United States and the response of the American Jewish community in all its religious and social spectrum towards Zionism, especially in Pittsburgh. The discussion focuses on the early Zionist activity among the community members and on the Zionist activists' efforts to cope with the challenges posed to them, by both world events and especially the strong Reform movement, which traditionally opposed the "Zionist idea." The ways in which the "Zionist idea" was implemented were examined through a number of lenses, beginning with the early activity among the city's Jewish residents, continuing with establishing Zionist associations, to the convening of Zionist congresses and conferences in Pittsburgh, when leading figures of the American Zionist movement participated. The conferences that took place in the city and the participation of Zionist leaders placed Pittsburgh on the map of Zionism and made it a key stop during their tours across the United States. This research is based on primary sources dealing with the early Zionist activity in the city. The sources include minutes of the conferences and articles from local and national newspapers, which described the Zionist activity in Pittsburgh and encouraged participation in the Zionist clubs. The secondary sources focus on the activists' lives and characters and their influence on their local Zionist activity. The findings point to the fact that although Zionist historiography does not cover early Pittsburgh Zionists, their local activity was important and significant, and their contribution to the American Zionist movement was far from negligible.
