Fonthill Road finally landed the big prize he so richly deserved when he defied a supposedly unfavourable low draw in the pounds 120,690 totesport Ayr Gold Cup.
Richard Fahey's tough gelding was beaten a whisker in the famous Scottish sprint 12 months ago as well as losing out in a photo- finish in last year's Stewards' Cup.
But his luck changed as Paul Hanagan kept the 16-1 shot over on the far side from stall six, along with Kostar and Mecca's Mate, as the remainder of the 23-runner field headed for the stand rail.
Borderlescott led the nearside group and looked set to score until Fonthill Road shot clear on the far side at the furlong pole.
The race was soon in the bag as Hanagan kept him up to his work to beat Borderlescott (11-2) by a length, with a head back to Advanced (40-1) and Coleorton Dancer (25-1) fourth.
Hogmaneigh, the well-backed 9-2 favourite, was short of room at halfway and could never land a blow, eventually trailing home in 13th.
