This abductive study examines the effect that AI has on Swedish newspapers and journalists. The theories that were used were Scandinavian institutionalism, Schatzki's practice theory and Herzberg’s hygiene-motivationtheory. Seven people, with different editor roles or journalists with significant knowledge of AI, from six big and medium sized newspapers in Sweden were asked how AI has changed practices and work at their newspaper. 24 practices directly related to AI could be found based on the interviews. The results from the interviews inspired a questionnaire about how journalists experience that their motivation is affected by new or changed practices because of AI. The questionnaire, which, among other things, concerned a selection of practices identified, was answered by writing journalists. A few of the respondents were interviewed to further develop their answers. Regarding the AI practices, journalists experience a varied level of impact on their motivation. Some find that their motivation increases, others that it decreases and some that it is not affected by the practices. The results also provide clues as to why AI practices may lead to changed motivation. The five motivation factors that were identified are: changed performance; (challenge in) the work itself; how fun it is and pride. Responses from the survey and interviews show implications for the journalists themselves, Swedish newsrooms, and democracy.
