Abstract

Chimenti and Limongi address the challenges faced by academic journals in finding willing and committed reviewers, highlighting the pressures of academic life, such as heavy teaching loads and the lack of recognition for reviewing, which divert researchers from their original calling to create and share knowledge. This issue is particularly pressing in Brazil, where scientific infrastructure relies heavily on voluntary contributions. They stress that without reviewers, the academic publishing system collapses, leading to delays, diminished journal reputation, and lack of access to new research. They introduces the EMPATHY framework for effective reviewing, which focuses on empathy, professionalism, and constructive feedback. They argue that high-quality reviews benefit authors, journals, and reviewers by improving research, fostering personal development, and strengthening academic networks. Finally, they encourages researchers to embrace reviewing not just as a collaborative task, but as a collective responsibility that sustains open science and shapes the future of scientific knowledge in Brazil.
