Abstract

Plasma transferred arc cladding process is a flagship technology for the deposition of hard and wear resistant hybrid coatings on metal substrates. Coating materials such as ceramic and metal-ceramic dual reinforcement’s plays a major role in development of these coatings on carbon steels, stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloy substrate surfaces to deposit wear resistant coatings. Scientific approach followed by different researchers during sample preparation which is a very important step for material characterization; also discussed in this paper. Varieties of reinforcement particles and substrate materials used for fabricating wear resistant coatings are also mentioned in this paper. Use of consumables such as emery papers, acetone for substrate cleaning, poly vinyl alcohol as a binder for mixing coating materials to form semi-solid paste for laying on top of the substrate surface are also addressed in this article.
