Abstract

This dissertation explores the enhancement and security of smart home devices through precise edge and hybrid cloud system technologies utilizing HTTP/3 communications. HTTP/3, the latest iteration of the HTTP protocol, offers significant improvements over its predecessors by using UDP-based transport, which provides lightweight, efficient data transmission, and eliminates the TCP three-way handshake. These features position HTTP/3 as a promising protocol for IoT applications, overcoming limitations faced by current protocols like HTTP and CoAP. By leveraging edge computing, which reduces latency by processing data closer to the source, and containerization technologies, this research aims to deploy a localized cloud within smart homes using Raspberry Pi clusters with Nextcloud and Home Assistant. This setup addresses privacy concerns, reduces reliance on external networks, and enhances performance, especially in rural and underserved regions. Through literature review and practical implementation, this work evaluates the effectiveness of HTTP/3 in smart home environments, proposing a resilient architecture that integrates edge and cloud computing to improve latency, resource consumption, and energy efficiency. The dissertation also includes security measures for HTTP/3 communications in cloud environments, ensuring robust performance and secure data exchange.
