Abstract

This thesis uses Alejo Carpentier's The Kingdom of This World to analyze the complexities that characterize the identity of people of African descent in the Caribbean in the 18th and 19th centuries, before and during the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). During this period, people of African descent found ways to express and reconstruct their identity, charting new paths and agencies of resistance and self-determination, thereby denying the historically centralized and rigidly imposed identity built on the foundations of colonization and enslavement of an oppressive colonial system. The thesis exposes the scars of the Caribbean's past since its first contact with Europeans and explains why reconstructing an Afro-descendant identity is a complex exercise. The findings suggest that, given the absence of systems that tend to grant advantages and privileges to whites over other races, the equality of all people, regardless of their origin or social position, is assured.
