Viagens que Tomam Partido: Comunistas Portugueses no País dos Sovietes

Abstract

A apreensão da realidade soviética foi incansavelmente almejada no decorrer do século XX. Em torno dela mobilizaram-se distintas ferramentas e grelhas analíticas. Uma delas, apesar de desconsiderada não poucas vezes: a observação direta informada por um dispositivo biológico transportado pela maioria dos humanos, os olhos. Esta dissertação trata daqueles que colocaram as mochilas às costas e partiram rumo à União Soviética para a verem tal como ela era . E fá-lo concentrando-se, particularmente, em alguns dos militantes comunistas portugueses. Dois principais objetivos guiaram esta investigação. O primeiro, a reconstrução de alguns dos trânsitos percorridos entre Portugal e a União Soviética no decurso do século XX – especialmente, os trânsitos realizados através dos canais do Partido Comunista Português. O segundo, a identificação e análise das narrativas de viagem divulgadas no contexto português e as produzidas por aqueles que, idos de Portugal, visitaram a URSS. Trata-se, por isso, de uma dissertação que combina os estudos dos comunismos com a análise daquilo que se tende a nomear de literatura de viagem. Uma dissertação que, em última análise, procura responder à seguinte pergunta: o que é que os comunistas portugueses disseram ter visto no País dos Sovietes?

The apprehension of soviet reality was tirelessly pursued throughout the 20th century. Various tools and analytical frameworks were mobilized around it. One of them, often disregarded: direct observation, informed by a biological device carried by most humans – the eyes. This dissertation examines those who strapped their backpacks on and set off for the Soviet Union to see it as it truly was . It does so by focusing particularly on some Portuguese communist militants. Two main objectives guided this research. The first was the reconstruction of some of the journeys between Portugal and the Soviet Union during the 20th century—especially those undertaken through the channels of the Portuguese Communist Party. The second was the identification and analysis of the travel narratives disseminated in the Portuguese context and those produced by individuals who, having left temporally Portugal, visited the USSR. This is, therefore, a dissertation that combines the study of communisms with the analysis of what is commonly referred to as travel literature. Ultimately, it seeks to answer the following question: what did Portuguese communists claim to have seen in the Land of the Soviets?
