Abstract

Alternate abstract:

Given the unusual circumstances in which the then Count of Boulogne came to govern the kingdom of Portugal, and the oath he was required to swear in Paris before taking on that role, it is reasonable to assume that, once he became king, Afonso III would undoubtedly honour that promise. Yet, as had happened with his predecessors, disagreements between the royal power and the spiritual power soon arose, and at the height of these tensions, the Portuguese bishops withdrew from the kingdom.

Thus, this master’s dissertation will aim to examine the dynamics between these two spheres of power during the reign of King Afonso III, starting with his brief government as curator of the kingdom and proceeding through his entire reign, with particular attention to how royal and episcopal authorities converged and collided within a 13thcentury European kingdom. Drawing on a range of historical sources, this work seeks to identify and analyse both the periods of apparent cooperation and mutual support and the moments of open conflict between the king of Portugal and the bishops of his realm.
