Abstract

O presente relatório explora as experiências adquiridas durante um estágio de seis meses na Missão Permanente de Portugal junto das Nações Unidas, em Nova Iorque. O estudo está dividido em três secções. A primeira secção analisa a relação histórica de Portugal com as Nações Unidas, com foco nas principais áreas de atuação da Missão, como a paz e segurança, o desenvolvimento e os direitos humanos. A segunda secção descreve as atividades do estágio, tais como a participação em reuniões da Assembleia Geral da ONU, a elaboração de telegramas diplomáticos e a participação de Portugal em debates críticos da ONU. Estas tarefas permitiram conhecer a dinâmica processual da diplomacia multilateral e sublinhar a complexidade das negociações internacionais. A terceira secção aborda o conceito teórico de soft power e a forma como Portugal o aplica no sistema da ONU. Examina a posição estratégica de Portugal na União Europeia e no G77+China, bem como a forma como utiliza a formação de coligações para influenciar a diplomacia global.

This internship report explores the experiences received during a six-month internship at the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations in New York. The study is divided into three sections. The first section examines Portugal's historical relationship with the United Nations, focusing on the Mission's primary areas of operation, such as peace and security, development, and human rights. The second section outlines the internship activities, such as attending UN General Assembly meetings, producing diplomatic telegrams, and helping Portugal participate in critical UN discussions. These assignments provided insight on the procedural dynamics of multilateral diplomacy and emphasized the complexity of international talks. The third section delves into the theoretical concept of soft power and how Portugal applies it inside the UN system. It examines at Portugal's strategic position in both the European Union and the G77+China, as well as how it uses coalition-building to influence global diplomacy.
