HE'S battled a brain tumour and risked the scorn of Jacques Chirac, but Scottish chef Andrew Fairlie proved yesterday that nothing would stand in the way of his cooking, when his eponymous restaurant became the only eatery in Scotland to gain a second Michelin star.
The accolade, announced as Michelin published its 2006 guide to the best restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland, comes just three years after Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles received its first star from the respected French guide. "Opening my own restaurant was always a dream; winning a Michelin star was another," Mr Fairlie said yesterday from Thailand, where he is on holiday. "Winning a second feels fantastic and a great honour."
Andrew Fairlie's at Gleneagles is the first restaurant in Scotland in five years to receive a second Michelin star. The last, the Altnaharrie Inn near Ullapool, lost its rating after the head chef and co-owner, Gunn Eriksen, sold the premises.
