Jamal Zahalka, former chairman of the majority-Arab party Balad, was elected on Saturday to lead the most important umbrella organization representing Arab citizens in Israel.
Zahalka received 53 of 73 votes in the central council of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, defeating his former party colleague Neveen Abu Rahmoun, who, if elected, would have become the committee's first female head.
The former lawmaker will replace current chairman Mohammad Barakeh, who has served in the role for over a decade.
