alternating sides, with 16 teams advancing beyond the preliminary rounds. Bankruptcy practitioners judge the preliminary rounds and briefs, and leading appellate and bankruptcy judges preside in the advanced rounds. Students do not need to have bankruptcy law experience to compete and advance, and all competitors receive a certificate of achievement.
The fee covers lunch on Feb. 28 and March 1 for competitors and coaches; a reception on March 1 for competitors and coaches; lunch on March 2 for teams that have advanced to the quarter-final rounds; and admission to the Gala Reception on March 2 for all competitors (coaches can purchase tickets at a discounted rate).
Jointly sponsored by St. John's Law and ABI, the competition is one of the nation's preeminent moot court competitions. It promotes and recognizes the finest oral and written advocacy on significant issues in bankruptcy practice. The competition is named for the late Chief Bankruptcy Judge Conrad B. Duberstein, a 1941 graduate of St. John's Law and an early director of ABI. The ABI Endowment will present the following awards to the winners: $5,000 to the first-place team; $3,000 to the second-place team; $1,500 to the two third-place teams; and $1,000 each for Best Oralist and Best Brief.
An ABI member since 1998, Judge Shannon is a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Delaware in Wilmington, appointed in 2006 and reappointed on March 13, 2020. He manages a full chapter 11 docket and also handles all chapter 13 consumer bankruptcy cases filed in Delaware. He served as Chief Judge from 2014-18. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Shannon was a partner with Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP in Wilmington, Del., where he primarily represented corporate debtors and official committees in chapter 11 cases. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts to serve on the Judicial Conference Committee for the Administration of the Bankruptcy System in 2015; his term ended in 2022. In 2023, Chief Justice Roberts appointed Judge Shannon to the Judicial Conference Committee on Court Administration and Case Management. He also serves as chair of the Third Circuit Judicial Council Committee on Bankruptcy.
Judge Shannon has served on intercircuit assignment to the District of Puerto Rico since April 2022, when he was appointed the judicial mediator for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Company's Title III insolvency proceedings.
