Poe's Everlasting «Myth» in Spain: What Cuarto Milenio Has To Say (Spoiler Alert: Foucauldian Voyeurism)

Abstract

Since 2005, the TV program Cuarto Milenio has been entertaining a constantly growing audience, with «information» about any kind of supernatural events and/or mysterious characters. Of course, Edgar Allan Poe (or his legend) can easily fall within this category (as it happened in 2007). So, the aim of this paper is to analyze how Cuarto Milenio has reconstructed Poe's last years (especially last days), with the particularity that, to do so, the host Iker Jiménez conceives an «original» narration to tell his tale, going beyond the limits of both TV and literary formats. To achieve this objective, we will follow the philosophy of Michel Foucault, especially the concepts that have to do with voyeurism. This theoretical approach will give us the opportunity of analyzing concepts such as surveillance and subservience, or how the eye of the reader/watcher (narratee) modifies the narrated «reality. »

Desde 2005, el programa televisivo Cuarto Milenio ha venido entreteniendo a un público en constante crecimiento con «información» sobre cualquier tipo de hecho sobrenatural o sobre cualquier «personaje misterioso». Por supuesto, Edgar Allan Poe (o su leyenda) se puede incorporar fácilmente a esta categoría (como ocurrió en 2007). En consecuencia, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo Cuarto Milenio reconstruyó los últimos años (con un especial énfasis en los últimos días) de la vida de Poe, con la particularidad de que, para ello, el presentador, Iker Jiménez, crea una narración «original» para contar su historia, traspasando los límites tanto del formato literario como del formato televisivo. Para alcanzar nuestro objetivo, partiremos de la filosofía de Michel Foucault, especialmente en lo concerniente al concepto de voyerismo. Esta aproximación teórica nos permitirá analizar términos clave tales como «vigilancia» y «contravigilancia» o cómo el ojo del lector/espectador (narratario) modifica la «realidad» narrada.
