A terrorist plot to bomb the World Cup was smashed by Scotland Yard yesterday.
Eight men, believed to be planning a wave of bombings and shootings in France next month, were seized by armed detectives.
They have been described as Algerian Islamic fundamentalists.
Three of the men were held at a house near Wembley Stadium.
The others, all said to be Algerians, were held at other addresses in north London.
Last night, the suspects were being questioned at the high- security Paddington police station.
Anti-terrorist detectives believe the men are the brains behind plans to wreak mayhem at the tournament.
