Abstract

The ubiquitous use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology has led to an explosion of scholarly interest in investigating the application of this emerging technology to supporting student learning and development. To gain an overarching view of the existing scientific literature and identify this field's areas of intense interest and future research trends, this systematic review, conducted with the assistance of the visualization software, aims to answer five research questions. This review identifies the main contributors to the relevant research, analyzes the status quo of GenAI technology in education, synthesizes the benefits and challenges of GenAI integration, and proposes interventions for future applications. The study proposes that a closer collaboration network in three dimensions—pedagogical use, learning integration, and administrative operation—may contribute to tackling negative impacts on student development and enhance effective learning.
