Palinoestratigrafia Como Suporte a Modelos de Cartografia de Alta Resolução: O Estudo de Caso da Sondagem Histórica JS1 - João Serra, Faixa Piritosa Ibérica

Abstract

O presente relatório de estágio insere-se no contexto do estudo palinoestratigráfico da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica, uma das regiões mais relevantes a nível geológico da zona sudoeste da Península Ibérica (FPI). Este trabalho tem como foco o estudo da sondagem de prospeção mineral JS1 - João Serra, com o objetivo de confirmar as idades dos sedimentos intersectados e contribuir para um modelo estratigráfico de alta resolução. As metodologias aplicadas no estudo palinoestratigráfico incluíram a análise de 25 amostras recolhidas na sondagem JS1 executada no setor de João Serra da FPI e guardada na Litoteca de Aljustrel do LNEG, com foco na identificação de palinomorfos, especialmente esporos, algas e acritarcas, como elementos essenciais para a datação e reconstrução dos ambientes sedimentares supostamente de idade Devónico Superior a Carbonífero Inferior (Mississipiano). Os resultados obtidos, permitiram datar os sedimentos marinhos intersectados pelo furo estudado, com base nas espécies-guia identificadas como Retispora lepidophyta, de idade Famenniano Tardio (Estruniano), apesar da fraca preservação da matéria orgânica de algumas amostras. As associações presentes observadas indicam que os sedimentos foram depositados num ambiente predominantemente marinho distal, sob condições anóxicas. Este estudo confirma o potencial do estudo da palinoestratigrafia como uma ferramenta necessária para complementar a cartografia geológica e definir, com maior cuidado e resolução, a estratigrafia do setor de João Serra da FPI. Este trabalho destaca também a importância da realização de estudos palinológicos noutras sondagens da região norte da FPI, com vista à consolidação de modelos geológicos interpretativos mais robustos.

This internship report is part of the palynostratigraphic study of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), one of the most geologically significant regions in the southwestern area of the Iberian Peninsula. The focus of this work is the study of the JS1 – João Serra mineral exploration borehole, with the objective of confirming the ages of the intersected sediments and contributing to a high-resolution stratigraphic model. The methodologies applied in the palynostratigraphic study included the analysis of 25 samples collected from the JS1 borehole, drilled in the João Serra sector of the IPB and stored at the LNEG’s Drill Core Library in Aljustrel. The study focused on the identification of palynomorphs—particularly spores, algae, and acritarchs—as key elements for dating and reconstructing the sedimentary environments, which are assumed to range in age from the Late Devonian to the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian). The results obtained allowed the marine sediments intersected by the borehole to be dated based on the identification of index species such as Retispora lepidophyta, which is indicative of a Late Famennian (Strunian) age, despite the poor preservation of organic matter in some samples. The observed palynological assemblages indicate that the sediments were deposited in a predominantly distal marine environment under anoxic conditions. This study confirms the potential of palynostratigraphy as a valuable tool to support geological mapping and to define, with greater precision and resolution, the stratigraphy of the João Serra sector of the IPB. This work also highlights the importance of conducting palynological studies on other boreholes in the northern region of the IPB, with a view to consolidating more robust interpretative geological models.
