¿Cómo pensar en la nobleza señorial española del siglo XVIII? Una cuestión de perspectiva

Abstract

Este ensayo problematiza el encaje en el reformismo ilustrado del régimen señorial en manos de la gran nobleza española. Primero se plantean los problemas historiográficos y conceptuales existentes y se propone una perspectiva alternativa. Luego se cuestionan la intensidad y la eficacia de las medidas antiseñoriales emprendidas por la administración borbónica y se insiste en la capacidad del ámbito señorial tanto para resistir como para adaptarse a los cambios. Esta combinación de solidez con flexibilidad se explica aplicando a lo señorial el concepto de dispositivo de poder, un conjunto de estructuras y prácticas consolidado desde la época anterior que reúne en su seno relaciones informales y formales y canaliza intercambios materiales e inmateriales. Esta perspectiva explica la larga duración del señorío castellano y su vigorosa permanencia durante el siglo XVIII.

This essay focuses on the seigneurial system of the high Spanish nobility within the Enlightenment reformism. First, the existing historiographical and conceptual problems are raised and an alternative perspective is proposed. After this, I challenge the actual intensity and effectiveness of the anti-seigneurial measures undertaken by the Bourbon Spanish administration, and I underscore the capacity of the seigneurial system to both resist and adapt to changes. This combination of solidity and flexibility can be explained by applying to the seigneurial phenomenon the concept of power device, a set of structures and practices that had been consolidated since earlier times, bringing together informal and formal relationship and channelling material and immaterial exchanges. This perspective explains the long duration of the Castilian nobiliar property and its vigorous permanence during the Eighteenth Century.
