Jirones del cambio entre Fajardo y Toledo La proyección heráldica de los marqueses de Villafranca y Vélez en el largo siglo XVIII

Abstract

La evolución de los linajes y las casas de la aristocracia española en el siglo XVIII no fue lineal. La clave en su desarrollo cotidiano descansaba en la incertidumbre propia de las múltiples circunstancias que podían acabar con las estrategias pensadas en el engrandecimiento del grupo. Todos los jirones de esa realidad cambiante se reflejan en la heráldica. Nos referimos a una disciplina que no agota sus posibilidades en la descripción, sino que conecta con la evolución social y cultural de los nobles para revelarnos detalles sobre cómo se concebían y querían ser reconocidos. Por medio del análisis heráldico vamos a examinar el proceso por el que los marqueses de Villafranca y Vélez, unidos desde principios del setecientos, dieron encaje a las armas procedentes de casas y linajes diferentes. Asimismo, pretendemos estudiar la proyección de esa nueva identidad noble, su jerarquización y el resultado recreado por los titulares a lo largo del setecientos.

The evolution of the lines and houses of the Spanish aristocracy in the 18th century was not linear. The key to their daily evolution lay in the uncertainty inherent in the many circumstances that could put an end to the strategies designed for the aggrandisement of the group. All the fragments of this changing reality are reflected in heraldry. We are talking about a discipline that does not exhaust its possibilities in description, but links up with the social and cultural evolution of the nobility to reveal details of how they perceived themselves and wished to be recognised. Through heraldic analysis, we will study the process by which the Marquises of Villafranca and Vélez, united since the beginning of the 17th century, brought together the coats of arms of different houses and lineages. We will also study the projection of this new aristocratic identity, its hierarchy and the results achieved by the titleholders throughout the 18th century.
