Carlos Ruta: cortesano y artista aficionado en la corte borbónica (1725-1794)

Abstract

En el presente artículo se aborda la figura de Carlos Ruta, un italiano que entró al servicio de Carlos III durante su estancia en Nápoles y llegó hasta España, donde continuó su labor al servicio de este rey y su hijo Carlos IV. Las noticias que hasta ahora han llegado sobre su persona son muy fragmentarias y abordadas desde prismas muy alejados. Siendo fundamentalmente un cortesano cerca del rey, de entre todas sus actividades sobresale su labor como maestro de dibujo del príncipe Carlos y del infante Gabriel, así como su desempeño en el mundo del arte y la arquitectura amateur, aspectos que más nos interesanen este caso. Estas facetas nos acercan al asunto del ejercicio diletante del arte en la corte española, cuestión que este artículo pretende desarrollar.

This article deals with the figure of Carlos Ruta, an Italian who entered the service of Charles III during his stay in Naples and arrived to Spain, where he continued his work in the service of this king and his son Charles IV. The information that has so far come down to us about him is very fragmentary and approached from very different perspectives. Although he was basically a courtier close to the king, his work as drawing master to the prince Carlos and the Infant Gabriel stands out among all his activities, as does his work in the world of amateur art and architecture, which is the aspect that interests us most in this case. This facet brings us closer to the issue of Ruta's dilettante exercise of art in the Spanish Court, a question that this article aims to develop.
