Abstract

Alternate abstract:

This article focuses on the training and performance of elementary school teachers in Argentina between the late 1870s and the 1930s, and its main objective is to highlight the affective dimension of the teaching task. From the analysis of various materials (teacher training manuals, articles and reports submitted to the Ministry of Public Instruction), the aim is to show that references to didactic-methodological aspects were accompanied by allusions to taste, enthusiasm, passion, grace and pedagogical tact, which, far from being accessory elements, were considered essential to performance. This article is situated in the field of the history of education and is nourished by the conceptual contributions of affect theory. In particular, we turn to the concept of affective disposition, which allows us to go beyond the idea of fixed affective traits of the personality, to think of potential inclinations that are actualized in relationships and that are capable of being formed. The survey of the sources consulted permit us to transcend dichotomous approaches and to suggest that the success of teaching was located «between» the heart and the intelligence, that is, at the intersection between content knowledge, didactic rules and the affective dispositions.
