La experiencia de madres puertorriqueñas de adolescentes lesbianas, gays y bisexuales ante la revelación de la orientación afectiva por voz de sus hijos e hijas

Abstract

El propósito de esta investigación fenomenológica fue explorar y documentar las experiencias de diez madres puertorriqueñas ante la revelación de la orientación afectiva LGB por voz de un hijo o hija adolescente. Se estableció la siguiente pregunta central de investigación: ¿Qué experiencias significativas testimonian diez madres puertorriqueñas ante la revelación de la identidad sexual LGB por voz de sus hijos e hijas adolescentes? A partir de esta pregunta central se propusieron las siguientes cuatro subpreguntas: 1) ¿Cuál es el trasfondo psicológico y social de las madres?; 2) ¿Cómo responden las madres puertorriqueñas cuando sus hijos o hijas adolescentes les revelan su orientación afectiva LGB?; 3) ¿Qué consecuencias psicológicas y sociales advienen en las madres tras esa revelación?; 4) ¿Cómo se desarrollan las relaciones maternofiliales una vez que sus hijos e hijas adolescentes revelan su orientación afectiva LGB?

Las participantes de este estudio fueron once madres puertorriqueñas entre las edades de 40 y 67 años cuyos hijos e hijas les revelaron su orientación LGB durante la adolescencia, es decir, entre los 13 y los 21 años. La recopilación de datos se llevó a cabo mediante dos entrevistas a profundidad de aproximadamente 90 minutos cada una. El análisis se realizó siguiendo el modelo de Teoría Emergente de Corbin y Strauss.

A partir del análisis, surgieron las siguientes ocho categorías: La familia de origen como punto de referencia, Acogiendo y ejerciendo la maternidad, Actitudes hacia las personas LGB, El preludio a la revelación, La revelación, Navegando juntos las aguas heteronormativas, Reafirmación del amor incondicional. Estas ocho categorías dieron lugar a la siguiente categoría central: Validando y afirmando la identidad LGB de los hijos a través del amor incondicional.

Los hallazgos destacan el rol del amor incondicional y las actitudes favorables previas hacia las personas LGB como aspectos que facilitaron la aceptación por parte de las madres. La emoción predominante tras la revelación fue la preocupación por el discrimen y la violencia que sus hijos podrían enfrentar. Las madres transformaron en aliadas y defensoras de sus hijos. A partir de estos hallazgos, se propone un Modelo de Maternidad Afirmativa que ilustra esta trayectoria.

The purpose of this phenomenological research was to explore and document the experiences of ten Puerto Rican mothers regarding the disclosure of LGB affective orientation by their adolescent children. The following central research question was established: What significant experiences do ten Puerto Rican mothers testify to regarding the disclosure of LGB sexual identity by their adolescent children? Based on this central question, the following four sub-questions were proposed: 1) What is the psychological and social background of the mothers?; 2) How do Puerto Rican mothers respond when their adolescent children disclose their LGB affective orientation?; 3) What psychological and social consequences do mothers face following this disclosure?; 4) How do mother-child relationships develop once their adolescent children disclose their LGB affective orientation?

The participants in this study were eleven Puerto Rican mothers between the ages of 40 and 67 whose children disclosed their LGB orientation during adolescence (between 13 and 21 years old). Data collection was conducted through two in-depth interviews of approximately 90 minutes each. The analysis was carried out following Corbin and Strauss’s Grounded Theory model.

From the analysis, the following eight categories emerged: Family of origin as a point of reference, Embracing and practicing motherhood, Attitudes toward LGB individuals, The prelude to disclosure, The disclosure, Navigating heteronormative waters together, and Reaffirmation of unconditional love. These eight categories led to the following core category: Validating and affirming the LGB identity of children through unconditional love.

The findings highlight the role of unconditional love and prior favorable attitudes toward LGB individuals as factors that facilitated maternal acceptance. The predominant emotion following the disclosure was concern regarding the discrimination and violence their children might face. The mothers transformed into allies and advocates for their children. Based on these findings, an Affirmative Motherhood Model is proposed to illustrate this trajectory.
