Abstract

Alternate abstract:

This research analyzes the concept of "race" in medieval Iberia and its implications for the formation of anti-Judaism directed against converted Jews. In this historical context, the notion of "race" diverged from its modern interpretation by intertwining religious, genealogical, and social dimensions. The study is based on an exhaustive analysis of historical sources-theological treatises, legal statutes, and scholarly writings-which make it possible to reconstruct the practices and discourses that supported the differentiation between Old Christians and conversos. The results show that the idea of "race" in medieval Iberia was not limited to physical traits but also involved a spiritual and genealogical component aimed at preserving social and religious separation. Overall, the research demonstrates that racial anti-Judaism encompassed all forms of exclusion beyond matters of faith, shaping a lasting structure of discrimination that conditioned both the integration of conversos and the very definition of medieval Christian identity.
