Abstract

This thesis explores the connection between popular culture icons and the human psyche. It demonstrates how identifying archetypal roles in the media may help people find meaning, purpose, and direction in their lives. Grounded in depth psychology, this thesis maps the archetypal elements of analytical psychology and illustrates how archetypal characters relate to the human journey toward individuation. With alchemical hermeneutic analysis and heuristic research as a foundation, the author focuses on popular culture icons that have had a personal significance to him, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Providing an in-depth psychological interpretation of this franchise that incorporates the author’s personal experiences, this research indicates how archetypal media can help one on the path toward self-realization. As a contribution to the field of counseling and depth psychology, the author also describes how archetypal stories may be used in modern psychotherapeutic settings.
