After 20 years as a Kanawha Circuit judge, Herman Canady is calling it quits.
Canady, 65, officially announced his retirement from the bench Wednesday morning.
"I suppose this will put an end to the rumors," Canady said. "I have talked to my colleagues about this decision. It was not as easy a decision as I thought it was going to be. I suppose I will miss this position."
His last day on the bench will be April 30.
Gov. Bob Wise will appoint a person to fill a two-year term until a new election is held for the judge's seat in 2004.
Wise can select a replacement himself or rely on the help of the judicial advisory committee, which would review applications, interview candidates and make a recommendation to the governor.
For the last few months, Canady has suffered problems with his right foot and required the use of crutches to get around. On Wednesday, Canady said his foot was fine and didn't have any bearing on his decision to retire.
