ONE of the first stops in my journey across the country with my small dog, Lissie, was Columbus, Ind. Having heard so much in the past 35 years about this beautiful little city, renowned for its architecture and sculpture, I was eager to visit. Many years ago, the Cummins Engine Foundation, through the leadership of J. Irwin Miller, offered to underwrite the architectural fee for any public building chosen by the people of Columbus.
When I reached the city on a warm, sunny September day, I drove over the Second Street Bridge, not a long bridge, but a striking one, with long white cords drawn up into a centered support system of bright red steel. Driving over this J. Mueller International Bridge Design, I felt that I was entering a wonderland and indeed the city is, in its own unique way.
The first stop was to the visitors center to reserve a city tour for the following day. We encountered a friendly staff, partly volunteer, one...
