West Virginians remembered the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 59 years earlier, some with ceremonies, some with personal reflections. Morgantown veterans on Thursday marched to the flag mast of USS West Virginia, which was heavily damaged in the attack. The ship eventually was refurbished and served in World War II.
Gov. Cecil Underwood issued a proclamation naming Interstate 470 near Wheeling the USS West Virginia Memorial Highway.
Veterans and crew members of the USS West Virginia SSBN also laid wreaths at the mast.
Memorial ceremonies also were held in Charleston and Huntington, among other cities.
