The curtain came down on the boys state high school basketball tournament Saturday night at the Charleston Civic Center, concluding what is a social event for many who follow high school basketball around our state.
If you hang around the arena and listen to the conversations, you will hear story after story of individuals and teams from past years. Here are some of the names that are floating through my memory from past state tournaments.
* Herbie Brooks, Mullens - Everyone knew Herbie in the early 1980s. He set a state tournament single-game scoring record and led Don Nuckols and the Rebels to three straight Class A championships from 1982-84 before going on to star at West Virginia.
* Wayne Casey, Stonewall Jackson - I doubt there has been a player in our state who loves the game more. Casey, who still plays, and plays well, led the then-dominant Generals to back-to-back AAA state championships in 1985-86.
* Lewis D'Antoni, Mullens - D'Antoni, whose 1955 team outscored a great Huntington High team with Leo Byrd to win a state title, may be the brightest basketball mind in state history. He is the father of New York Knicks...
