AS LEADER Peter Carter pointed out in his introduction to the piece, "lyric" is a most apposite description of Berg's Lyric Suite. Despite the 12-tone technique employed in some of the movements and the spectre of Second Viennese School angst, the work on the whole is filled with graceful melodic ideas and touching sentiment. Of course there are emotional outbursts and highly discordant moments, but the overall character is joyful and shot through with nostalgic recollections of Old Vienna.
