The Parkland Art Gallery will open on Monday an exhibition of contemporary sculpture, prints, photography and installation by Chicago-based artist Indira Freitas Johnson, who calls herself an artist and cultural worker from India.
"Indira Freitas Johnson - Hand in Hand; Opposition and Unity," will remain on display through Feb. 12. The artist's reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the gallery lounge and will feature classical Odissi dancer Gulapudi Raman Kumari and a talk by Johnson.
Earlier that day, at 1 p.m. in Room D244 at Parkland College, Johnson will discuss her work involving conflict resolution in Chicago public schools as part of the Shanti Organization for Peace.
While at Parkland on Jan. 21, 22 and 23, Johnson also will collaborate in creating a Rangoli community project. The project, based on a South Asian folk art tradition, is designed to unite diverse communities in a spirit of hope and friendship. Its main goal is to discover through dialogue, art and ritual the commonality of human experience and the spiritual potential inherent in all. For information about the Rangoli project here, contact the Parkland Art Gallery at 3512485, or visit www.parkland.edu.
