Books have been written about the Trojan War for almost 3,000 years. Long before Brad Pitt, the anger of Achilles was the most celebrated theme in ancient Greece. The Iliad should be an automatic choice for any library. The first European poem, it is also the most timeless: an incomparable epic of horror and heroism. Homer foreshadows the writings of all who have followed him. His work, Alexander Pope wrote, "is like a copious nursery, which contains the seeds and first productions of every kind".
