The most creative label in a crowded compilations and reissues market follows up Universal Sounds of America, its previous, funky free- jazz set from 10 years ago, with a storming double album of rarities and exotica. If CD1 leans more heavily towards fusion (once defined as free jazz with a backbeat), CD2 restores the balance of intensity with a superb sequence leading from Alice Coltrane (the hypnotic 'A Love Supreme'), through Stanley Cowell and Amina Claudine Myers to a passionate duet between Rashied Ali and Frank Lowe. Worth buying just for all that propulsive drumming.
