A MONUMENTAL row has blown up over the new look of a 16th century castle.
A local historical society and a leading archaeologist are outraged at the work carried out on Ballindooley Castle - a national monument built in 1574 near Headford in Co Galway.
It is owned by American Ms Mary Hegarty who is struggling to convert the building into a comfortable medieval home.
But outraged locals along with history students at University College Galway aren't happy with the face-lift.
Former UCG archaeologist Professor Etienne Rynne claims the change has converted the landmark castle into a "picturesque joke".
