Thirty-five years ago, seven child actors shot to fame when The Sound Of Music hit our screens. Little did they know then that the musical would become the most popular movie classic of all time, seen by an estimated one billion people worldwide.
The careers of lead actors Julie Andrews (Maria) and Christopher Plummer (Captain von Trapp) are well documented, but what became of the little von Trapps - Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl? Now, decades after they sang, danced and acted their socks off, the "children" have been reunited in the original film location of Salzburg, Austria for a special edition of After They Were Famous. We caught up with them to relive their childhood memories and find out how their lives have changed.
Charmian Carr, 57. (Liesl)
The eldest of the von Trapp children, Charmian was 21 when she sang I Am 16 Going On 17. The daughter of a doctor, and a part-time student, Charmian had had no acting or singing training but was encouraged to audition for the role by her mother. It was her first acting job and she beat fierce competition, including Mia Farrow, to win it.
In 1967, she married a dentist, Jay Brent, and the couple had two daughters, Jenny and Emily. Today, divorced Charmian lives in California where she runs her own interior design business and numbers Michael Jackson as one of her clients.
