Over 250 family members and friends on June 2 joined in celebrating the achievements of 75 area women, 90 percent of whom are single heads of households, who graduated from two employment-training programs sponsored by Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW).
Almost one-quarter of the graduates who received certificates during ceremonies held at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, 4606 16th Street, N.W., successfully completed WOW's 36-week electro-mechanical program, where they received classroom instruction and on-the-job training during internships.
The electro-mechanical program is funded by the Job Training Partnership Act and is administered by the D.C. Department of Employment Services.
The remaining graduates have completed a Rockefeller Foundation-funded training program for low-income single parents, where they received 10 weeks of basic employment skills training or 20 weeks of electro-mechanics instruction.
According to Executive Director Cindy Marano, "WOW's training programs have a good track record. In the past 20 years we've prepared over 2000 women for economic self-sufficiency....
