Getting stuck in traffic on the Felling Bypass inspired the events of Paul Buie's first play, which will now be staged professionally after he won a new comedy writing competition.
The 47-year-old manager of the Tyne and Wear Development Company explains: "Someone was threatening to jump from the Tyne Bridge and I got stuck trying to get into Newcastle.
"He was talked down, but the bridge and bypass and everywhere for miles was jammed. When I spoke to people afterwards, everyone was concerned about the irritation - the fact they were held up. No one mentioned the guy on the bridge. There was a contrast between someone at the end of his tether who wanted to end it all, and the people who were delayed an hour or two."
His play, Jump You Bastard, is a black comedy about David, whose suicidal urge causes him...
