Born into Brothels (Sunday 9.30pm, SBS), photojournalist Zana Briski's award-winning documentary, chronicles the transformation of a handful of children in the red-light district of Kolkata. Supplied with cameras by Briski, the children recorded their lives, as subjects and collaborators, changed forever by photography. Also transformed are the three volunteers whose stories are documented by Compass in The Kindness of Strangers (Sunday, 10.10pm, ABC). When the Boxing Day tsunami hit in 2004, the trio dropped everything to fly to Sri Lanka to help. It is a poignant exploration of altruism and why we feel good when we help. At the other end of the human spectrum is Infamous Murders (Wednesday, midnight, Seven), a scary look into the murderous abuse of power exercised by cult leaders such as Jim Jones, Shoko Asahara and Luc Jouret. Almost as challenging is Help (Wednesday, 7.30pm, SBS), the brilliant six- part observational series that goes inside the NSW Ambulance Service. An insight into the demanding life of paramedics and the distressing plight of emergency victims. Also taken for granted is the phenomenon that surrounds us and affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Light Fantastic: The Stuff of Light (Thursday, 2pm, SBS) is presented by Cambridge scholar Simon Schaffer, and part three of this repeat charts the discovery of light's true nature and its impact on technology.
