Kym Illman talks about his amazing rags-to-riches story
Have you ever been offered a chance at success? Would you recognise one if it presented itself? Spotting those rare opportunities - and being prepared to risk everything for them - is the secret to making it in business, according to WA entrepreneur, Kym Illman.
So how does a man go from having nothing to running a company that has served 9,500 businesses in 14 countries? It began back in 1988, with Illman being fired from a position at Channel 9.
"It was time for a change," recalls Kym, "so I decided to investigate an idea I'd been playing around with for a while." That idea was producing a weekly radiostyle audio production for clothing retailers to play in-store. He struck gold almost instantly when Jeanswest's 100 stores agreed to the service, much to Illman's surprise and delight. Says Illman, "I was earning in one day what I earned in five working in TV!" However, Illman also realised he could quite easily end up penniless again if he lost the contract, so he kept his eyes open for other ideas that might supplement...
