SOUTH Melbourne has given up the fight for Bill Damianos, saying the players' union is his last hope to get a release from Greek club Xanthi.
"We've hit a brick wall," South president Peter Mitrakas said yesterday.
Xanthi has refused South's token offer for a transfer and claims Damianos is in breach of his contract by not returning to Greece for pre-season after being loaned to South last season.
"We've done as much as we can," Mitrakas said.
"The PFA (players' union) should be batting for him."
Damianos conceded his situation looked bleak, but he has one advantage -- he is not affected by the transfer deadline that expired on Monday.
"We hold his registration already, so we can play him any time once Xanthi grants him a transfer," Mitrakas said.
