THERE was more sun-cream than spite on show at Optus Oval yesterday when Hawthorn thrashed Carlton by 79 points in a match witnessed by little more than 1000 fans.
Mindful of having next weekend off before the season starts at Easter, most of the players were not putting their bodies at undue risk.
Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab said the first half was the most important -- when both sides were at their most competitive.
He was pleased by the form of two newcomers, experienced Simon Cox, from the Western Bulldogs, and 2000 draftee Mark Williams, from country Western Australia.
