CHINATOWN OUTSIDE, LOWER EAST SIDE INSIDE
NEW YORK CITY - A visitor to the Eldridge Street Synagogue, open to the public last month, is in for something of a shock.
The area no longer presents remnants of the "world of our fathers". From the street, the synagogue leaps into view, and not only because of its imposing size and architecture, and the dramatic Gothic rose window enveloped in a horseshoe-shaped arch.
