Dolores Sibonga is attempting to make a comeback to public office, having recently filed for the vacancy on the Seattle City Council.
She believes she can be of service to the city, having already been on the council for 12 years.
"I have experience. I can step in without missing a beat," Sibonga promised.
The 74-year-old became the first Filipino American on the council when she was appointed to take the place of Phyllis Lamphere in August 1978. She won election to her first full term the following year and went on to serve for 12 years.
In 1989, Sibonga ran for mayor, but lost.
She aims to fill the seat left empty by Jim Compton, who announced last month that he is stepping down to pursue teaching and other opportunities in Romania and Egypt. Compton, a former KING-TV journalist, would have been up for re-election in 2007.
Whoever is chosen for the seat will serve until November. To keep the job, he or she would need to run for election, then run again for a full four-year term in the fall of 2007.
The filing deadline is Jan. 6.
