An extensive collection of South Asian art is on display at the Williams Benton Museum of Art, of the University of Connecticut at Storrs, Ct.
The works of some 55 artists, collectively shown under the label 'Masala: Diversity and Democracy in South Asian Art', brings together a varied and eclectic collection of contemporary art and photography, folk art and pop-culture art from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
It incorporates the works of South Asian artists as well as those Western artists who have been inspired by the art and culture of the South Asian region. Included in the latter category are the likes of Judith Blum; Charlotte Cain; Michael Peter Cain; Janet Echelman; Julie Evans; Gretchen Garner; Stephen Huyler; Joanna Kirkpatrick; Robert Kirschbaum; John Newman; Adrian Piper; Abby Robinson; Barbara Rossi; and Jeffrey Schiff.
The exhibition, which opened January 31, will continue till April 9; it will be complemented by a seven-lecture-presentation series on South Asian art by experts and scholars.
