This volume consists of annotated translations of a selection of late-antique writings. The central text is Victor of Vita's History of the Vandal persecution, a translation of which by John Moorhead appeared in 1990 in Liverpool University Press's Translated Texts for Historians. Readers might therefore be surprised to encounter another translation of this relatively minor, if none the less interesting, work so soon after the first. Martyn, however, makes his rationale clear in his introduction, remarking that Moorhead's version 'has useful notes, but unfortunately it very often omits words and distorts the sense of the Latin' (p. xxiii).
