Answering The Call Of The World's Children: Dr. Gwendolyn Calvert Baker. Heads The Efforts Of The U.S. Committee For UNICEF
Nationally known educator and activist Gwendolyn Calvert Baker is president and chief executive officer of the United States Committee for UNICEF, the oldest and largest of 38 national committees that mobilize support around the globe for UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.
The U.S. Committee depends entirely on voluntary contributions from the American public to carry out its work.
Each year, the Committee allocates funds to a selected number of UNICEF-assisted projects and a full domestic public education and information program that communicates the urgent needs of the world's children to large audiences in this country.
UNICEF-assisted projects funded by the U.S. Committee for UNICEF in 1994-1995 help with an additional 20 countries also receiving a smaller proportion of funds.
To further the U.S. Committee's activities on behalf of children worldwide, Dr. Baker and her staff work in partnership with a dedicated corps of volunteers, community organizations, businesses, foundations, and corporations.
This kind of cooperative effort, notes Dr. Baker, continues a tradition that has raised more than $400 million for UNICEF's work since the Committee was formed as a citizens' organization in 1947.
