East Side Shuls Embark on Renovations
NEW YORK -- The climbing vines and flower petals of the Bialystoker synagogue's stained glass windows are casting shadows on the floor in a kaleidoscope of colors. On this weekday morning, though, the only person there to see the display is unimpressed. "There is still a lot of work to do in order to fix them completely," says Mel Greenland, a stained glass craftsman who has been working to complete the two bottom sections of the windows since December. "I am supposed to be retired," Mr. Greenland says. "But how can I turn these windows down? I have been working in churches all my life. This, for me, is better."
